Lu Paternostro é artista visual multimeios, formada em Artes Plásticas pela FAAP – Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado –, onde estudou com mestres como Julio Plaza, Nelson Leirner, Regina Silveira, Evandro Jardim e Donato Ferrari. Desde os anos 1980, desenvolve uma obra autoral que transita entre a arte contemporânea, a ilustração, o design gráfico e a pintura, com forte apelo simbólico, narrativo e experimental.
Ao longo de mais de quatro décadas, Lu construiu um repertório expressivo e visualmente denso, explorando técnicas como nanquim, pintura, arte digital, grafismo e fotografia. Sua linguagem é marcada pela sobreposição de mundos — reais e imaginários — e por um traço firme, minucioso e orgânico, que percorre o abstrato e o figurativo com fluidez.
Como designer e ilustradora, desenvolveu a série Brasis em Traços, que valoriza elementos da cultura popular brasileira em painéis, rótulos e objetos. A série é fruto de uma pesquisa profunda sobre os saberes tradicionais e expressões visuais populares — como o cordel, os ex-votos, os mestres do barro e festas típicas regionais — e dialoga diretamente com o patrimônio cultural imaterial do Brasil.
Desde 2013, Lu também desenvolve séries de desenhos diários e pinturas que abordam temas íntimos, sociais e culturais, mantendo-se fiel à ideia de “múltiplos mundos” como fio condutor da sua poética. Sua produção circula em acervos particulares, plataformas de arte contemporânea como a Saatchi Art e como NFTs numerados na OpenSea.
Mundos Intrincados – Lu Paternostro
Série autoral iniciada em 1982, Mundos Intrincados funde arte abstrata e desenho figurativo com precisão quase obsessiva. De longe, as obras sugerem formas orgânicas ou padrões hipnóticos; de perto, revelam uma filigrana densa de personagens, cenas e narrativas ocultas. Cada traço nasce de um fluxo visual contínuo, criado com nanquim ou tinta sobre papel e pintura, em processos longos e meditativos. Lu Paternostro is a multidisciplinary visual artist with a degree in Fine Arts from FAAP – Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado – where she studied under influential Brazilian artists such as Julio Plaza, Nelson Leirner, Regina Silveira, Evandro Jardim, and Donato Ferrari. Since the 1980s, her body of work has spanned contemporary art, illustration, graphic design, and painting, marked by symbolic depth and a strong narrative sensibility.
Over four decades, Lu has developed a dense and expressive repertoire using techniques such as ink drawing, painting, digital art, graphic textures, and photography. Her language intertwines imagined and real worlds, with intricate, fluid linework that oscillates between abstraction and figuration.
As a designer and illustrator, she created the series Brasis em Traços, a colorful tribute to Brazil’s traditional culture, featured on murals, labels, and various objects. The series is based on deep research into Brazil’s intangible heritage — folk art, cordel literature, religious ex-votos, regional festivities, and artisanship.
Since 2013, she has also created drawing and painting series focused on personal, cultural, and social themes, always centered on the idea of multiple worlds. Her work is held in private collections and showcased on platforms like Saatchi Art and as numbered NFTs on OpenSea.
Mundos Intrincados – Lu Paternostro
An ongoing series started in 1982, Mundos Intrincados merges abstract art and figurative drawing with almost obsessive precision. From afar, the works suggest organic forms or hypnotic patterns; up close, they reveal dense filigrees of hidden figures, scenes, and stories. Each line emerges from a continuous, meditative visual flow in ink or paint. With strong symbolic and aesthetic appeal, the series moves between illustration, contemporary art, visionary art, and graphic surrealism. Os desenhos de Lu Paternostro constituem uma espécie de exorcismo e, mesmo que revele a extraordinária habilidade da artista, suas minúsculas imagens englobadas numa só obra, parecem “explodir” automaticamente como um sortilégio ou uma obsessão.
Embora sua inspiração seja transcendental, nada é casual na sua execução. Cada particular é analisado e estudado minuciosamente. As figuras e as cenas, sejam elas estranhas ou harmônicas, são elaboradas numa linguagem clara e positiva, são aparições de grande sensualidade. O estilo é firme e também delicado, às vezes intrigante e apocalíptico mas intimista e pessoal.
Expressionismo e surrealismo estão hoje bem longe da chamada arte contemporânea, entretanto combiná-los de maneira tão pessoal evocam o lado lúdico profundamente ressentido pela artista. A justaposição de uma certa folia à razão, fazem com que suas criações circunscrevem o conjunto das atividades resultantes do desejo humano de “ultrapassar um limite”, de alcançar “o impossível.
Absolutamente monocromáticas suas criações são ao mesmo tempo cômicas e angustiantes. Representam muitas vezes um tumulto incessante, um vendaval implacável que agita e contorce as próprias formas.Guardadas as proporções, a obra de Lu Paternostro poderia ser comparada com a de Hieronymus Bosch: são imagens sensuais, alucinantes, com certa passionalidade, que demonstram a livre determinação de enfrentar a realidade da vida. Embora não assumindo uma posição entre o bem e o mal, ela exprime, sim um aceitação da vida como ela é, vida que deve ser vivida com dignidade e uma compreensão racional da natureza irracional do ser humano.

Lu Paternostro’s drawings constitute a kind of exorcism and, although they reveal the extraordinary skill of the artist, their tiny images encompassed within a single work seem to “explode” automatically like a spell or an obsession.
Although her inspiration is transcendental, nothing in her execution is casual. Every detail is carefully analyzed and studied. The figures and scenes, whether strange or harmonious, are crafted in a clear and positive language; they are apparitions of great sensuality. The style is firm yet delicate, sometimes intriguing and apocalyptic, but intimate and personal.
Expressionism and surrealism are today far removed from what is called contemporary art; however, combining them in such a personal way evokes the playful side deeply felt by the artist. The juxtaposition of a certain madness to reason makes her creations encompass the whole range of activities resulting from the human desire to “surpass a limit,” to achieve “the impossible.”
Absolutely monochromatic, her creations are at the same time comic and distressing. They often represent an incessant turmoil, an relentless gale that shakes and twists the very forms themselves. In relative terms, Lu Paternostro’s work could be compared to that of Hieronymus Bosch: they are sensual, hallucinatory images, with a certain passion that demonstrates the free determination to face the reality of life. Although not taking a position between good and evil, she does express an acceptance of life as it is — a life that must be lived with dignity and a rational understanding of the irrational nature of the human being.
